Joyce Speziale’s Story . . .

Gilda’s Club members are introduced to the club in a variety of ways.  For some it’s a recommendation from their doctor; for others it’s through word of mouth or a brochure found in a local library.  For me, it was someone I worked with six years ago who was a member and told me about all the club had to offer.  It was when I myself was diagnosed with cancer and recovering from my surgery and radiation, that Gilda’s Club came to mind.

I first came to Gilda’s Club Northern New Jersey about a year ago.  After my initial visit, I came home excited. I told my family that the following week was the Thanksgiving Potluck and they just had to come because Gilda's was going to be my ‘home away from home’ and I wanted them to see it.

My family agreed that the clubhouse was a warm and welcoming environment – so much so that they have been part of the Gilda's Club family ever since.

I have gotten so much from Gilda's Club – the staff, members and volunteers.  I find Gilda's to be a true wellness center – a place of healing.  When I first joined, I was walking with a cane since it was just a couple months after my hip replacement surgery. After a few months of yoga, tai chi, and breath work (I even tried karate), I gained flexibility so that I no longer needed a cane.  I even take belly dancing classes!

I discovered through the arts and crafts classes at Gilda’s Club – drawing, painting, pottery (ceramics), beading, crocheting – that I had artistic abilities.  Friendships have developed during these classes, and in support groups and also in the kitchen, where we gather for food or tea and coffee.

I cannot fail to mention the special events such as ‘Spa Day’ and all the lectures and potlucks. I want to give back to this priceless community and volunteer whenever a need arises.  Even my husband shares his time – and talent – by playing his guitar for members at special events.  Gilda's is a Godsend and my life is so enriched because of it.

Home-like Setting
The clubhouse provides an opportunity for people with cancer and their families and friends to join together to build a meaningful community at a time when it is most needed, in a comfortable and safe environment.
